The show will include paintings on wood panel and works on paper from Smith’s the <em>Earth Below Suite</em>, so titled to describe not only a group of paintings and drawings, but also the artist’s meticulous research, observation, and manipulation—all of which serve to generate intellectual and visual metamorphoses.</p><blockquote><p style="text-align: center;">An exhibition of new works by MARK SMITH titled:<br /> THE EARTH BELOW<br /> will be on display May 5 &#8211; June 16, 2012 at<br /> William Campbell Contemporary Art.<br /> An opening reception will be held Saturday, May 5, 6 -8 p.m.</p></blockquote><p>A long-running interest in scientific processes, along with a concern about the ecology and humans’ negative effects on the planet, inform Smith’s work. To that end, his paintings involve much more than a straightforward application of pigment to surface; they comprise the literal and visual transformation from photographic image to digitally manipulated drawing to hand-rendered painting. He then uses specialized software and digital drawing media to manipulate, deconstruct, and rebuild the images as nonrepresentational, abstract fields. He often incorporates digital samples of his earlier paintings as well. Coupled with the new imagery, these studies preserve visual matter while creating additional layers of history and referencing a metamorphosis—both on the Earth’s surface and in the artwork. The final paintings represent Smith’s “spontaneous responses” to these carefully researched and constructed drawings. The artist builds the impulsive yet complex paintings by applying multiple layers of highly saturated color atop plaster-coated hardwood. By playing with the consistency of the paint, he creates a sense of slow movement and continuous flow. One was the Chief Marketing Officer from Modcloth and the other was the EVP of Marketing for Ralph Lauren.They both talked about how their companies interact with customers and what customers are looking for besides great product and great service.</p><h3>The Modcloth Method</h3><p><a href="http://www.fortworthretail.org/wp-content/uploads/Modcloth.png"><img class=" wp-image-1889 alignright" style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Modcloth - Be the Buyer" src="http://www.fortworthretail.org/wp-content/uploads/Modcloth-300x265.png" alt="Modcloth - Be the Buyer" width="270" height="239" /></a>Modcloth takes interaction with its customers to a whole new level. They encourage them to <a title="Modcloth be the buyer" href="http://www.modcloth.com/storefront/products/be_the_buyer" target="_blank">be a buyer</a> by offering two dress options and taking votes on which of the two should be added to the assortment. They encourage users to submit original designs for dresses which again are voted on by the community and put in to production if they are a top vote getter. <em>They see the value of their customers not only as sources of revenue but ideas and innovation and the future of the company</em>. And what do the customers get? Well, how many people out there can say that they designed a dress that is now sold on their favorite website?</p><blockquote><p>Modcloth has built its brand around the voice of its customer and when a customer feels valued for not just the money they have spent with you, but for their opinion, then that is a customer for life.</p></blockquote><h3>Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous</h3><p><img class="wp-image-1890 alignright" style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Ralph Lauren - Style Guide" src="http://www.fortworthretail.org/wp-content/uploads/ralphlauren-300x263.png" alt="Ralph Lauren - Style Guide" width="270" height="237" />Ralph Lauren’s approach is a bit different. They are not going to solicit design ideas from some 22 year old wanna be fashion designer. But, they have a classic brand that conjures up an image simply from hearing the name. And David Lauren, the EVP of Marketing knows that. <em>His entire goal is to create an environment, a place, a feeling, a level of luxury that people WANT to be a part of.</em> Whether it’s on the polo fields in the Hamptons, or in a ski lodge in Aspen, the Ralph Lauren person lives a luxurious, beautiful life. And when you step in to a Ralph Lauren boutique, or visit their website, you become one of them. It’s Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, but it’s accessible to you because you are a Ralph Lauren customer.</p><blockquote><p>Ralph Lauren has a firm understanding of what their brand is and what they want to represent to the consumer. And their marketing is all about giving you <a title="World of Ralph Lauren" href="http://global.ralphlauren.com/worldofralphlauren?ab=global_world_WorldOf" target="_blank">the tools to experience that world</a> with them.</p></blockquote><h2>The Takeaway</h2><p>My ultimate take away from that conference was that you have to know what your brand is and what you represent before you start inviting your customers to join you. It’s like having a dinner party before you know how to turn on the oven. Yeah, you can DO it, but it makes it a whole lot easier when you know how things work.</p><p>I do believe that Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, etc., etc are excellent tools for retailers to connect with our customers. I mentioned Facebook earlier. I am really good at Facebook. I have a nice group of followers that I want to communicate to on a daily basis. It’s very easy to take pictures with your iPhone and upload to your page, and once you get in that habit, it becomes second nature. My fans there know what to expect from me and I know what they respond to, so it works well. We have established a community. With Pinterest however, I’m still learning. My boards are a mixture of personal stuff and <a title="Bess and Evies" href="http://www.fortworthretail.org/spring-entertaining-made-easy-at-inside-out-designs/2012-03/" target="_blank">Bess &amp; Evie’s</a> stuff, there’s not a lot of merchandise from the store on there, it’s a bit random, and it’s painfully obvious that I quickly created a bunch of pins on boards because I felt pressured to do so. So, whatever social media channel you choose, <strong>be deliberate about it</strong>. Don’t throw stuff out there because you feel like you have to.
